AREAS of Support
HAWMA’s three main areas of support for the education sector are implemented through partners in Hyderabad:
1. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
A large portion of HAWMA’s funds go toward scholarships, administered by our partner organization in Hyderabad, the Foundation for Economic and Educational Development (FEED)—a well-respected non-governmental organization (NGO). Scholarships are awarded based on both merit and financial need. In 2011–2012, FEED awarded 6,800 scholarships and supported 4,000 students who were the children of deserving young widows or abandoned mothers. These programs have strong checks and balances in place and are supervised annually by HAWMA officials during visits to Hyderabad. Overhead costs in the United States are zero, and our partners in Hyderabad maintain overhead costs well below 10%. While HAWMA’s financial contribution is relatively modest within this large program, it remains highly impactful.
HAWMA also supports FEED’s establishment of the Hyderabad Institute of Excellence (HIE), located in Vikharabad, about two hours from Hyderabad. HIE is designed to provide education and training of the highest standards to meritorious students—those securing grades of 90% or higher—who are poor and deserving, with the goal of nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.

2. EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT OF GIRLS
The second-largest recipient of HAWMA funds is the Girls High School Moazzam Jahi Market, located near Charminar in the old city of Hyderabad. The school is governed by an all-women Board of Directors. For the past 15 years, HAWMA has supported the school’s operational budget. Approximately 700 girls from very poor families attend the school, which has consistently achieved excellent academic results. Graduating students are eligible to receive scholarships through the scholarship program mentioned above.
HAWMA is currently helping transition the school from Urdu to an English medium curriculum in a phased approach. To support this, the school is being assisted by the Bashir and Sarwar Babukhan Trust, which operates several English medium schools in Hyderabad. The first English class was introduced at the start of the 2013–14 academic year.
Additionally, HAWMA coordinates its support with two organizations based in the USA that assist the school:
